Thanks to the generosity of the universities and colleges that support our anti-poaching efforts our anti-poaching scouts have a new uniform. Edu-wize kindly donated bush jackets, thermal gloves and socks to keep them warm through the long, freezing night patrols..
With Secretary Bird numbers declining throughout their range, mainly due to the expansion of powerlines, we are honoured to have 3 pairs nesting at Mankwe
For the past 3 months the buffalo herd has been extremely elusive and we recently found out why. They have 3 calves to protect. The herd has become nocturnal and hide in thickets by day. We managed to capture photographs of the new claves on camera traps.
In a single night the dams and rivers went from completely dry to full and overflowing. The good rains have given much needed relief to o wildlife who were starting show signs of stress and low condition due to the 2 year long drought.
It was decided to introduce 11 disease free Buffalo onto Mankwe as part of a breeding programme. Buffalo are excellent ecosystem engineers and they will greatly enhance the ecosystem at Mankwe. One of the breeding cows is fitted with a GPS collar so we can track their movements at all times. After their introduction 3 weeks ago we are happy to report that the herd has settled in nicely and are quite content in their new home.
The dogs have been fitted with protective body armour to protect them from knives, machetes and attacks by poachers dogs. We are incredibly grateful to Ballistic Body Armour for their generous donation.
